Vor ca. sechs Jahren hat mich die Entdeckerlust gepackt und mein Köfferchen und ich sind im kleinsten Rotweinanbaugebiet Deutschlands gelandet – das Ahrtal, Mayschoß – die Metropole für Weinliebhaber und ab dann der Ort meiner Ausbildung für die nächsten zweieinhalb Jahre.
Sobald ich meine Prüfung zur Restaurantfachfrau erfolgreich abgeschlossen hatte, habe ich neue Herausforderungen gesucht und bin in der Grafschaft gelandet. Ein kleines Dörfchen namens Vettelhoven, das ich lieben gelernt habe, welches nur leider für junge Leute schon fast zu ruhig ist. Somit zog es mich nach Bonn und in das Siebengebirge. Als leidenschaftliche Fahrradfahrerin erkundete ich natürlich erst einmal das Rheintal, die Strecke von Bonn bis Remagen, rüber mit der Fähre nach Linz, zurück über Bad Honnef, Königswinter, Beuel und lernte meines Erachtens mit die schönsten Ortschaften Deutschlands kennen. Jetzt hat mich jedoch nicht nur mein privates sondern vielmehr mein berufliches Interesse nach Bad Honnef verschlagen. Und zwar darf ich mich als Nachfolgerin von Marcus Imig in Charly’s Lounge auf dem Universitätsgelände Bad Honnef vorstellen.
Ich würde mich sehr freuen wenn auch die Bad Honnefer ab und zu im Charly’s vorbei schauen würden. Unsere Öffnungszeiten sind Mo-Do 13.00- 22.30 Uhr und Fr 13.00-19.00 Uhr und nicht nur das Preisleistungsverhältnis sondern auch der Ausblick vom Charly’s überzeugen. Ich hoffe, das Interesse hat Sie gepackt und Sie schauen einfach mal vorbei. Zum Abschluss möchte ich jedoch einen besonderen Dank meinem Vorgänger Marcus widmen, für sein Vertrauen, seine herzliche Art und das er mich als seine würdige Nachfolgerin ausgesucht hat: lieber Marcus, alles Liebe, viel Erfolg und Gesundheit in Berlin!
Hello there Bad Honnef…a northerner discovers the Siebengebirge
About six years ago I was overcome by an urge for adventure and so I packed my bags and eventually found myself in the smallest wine region in Germany, the Ahr valley, Mayschoß, the place where I would spend the next two and a half years and finish my apprenticeship. As soon as I had completed the tests and was officially a certified restaurant specialist, I was looking for new challenges and ended up in Grafschaft. I stayed in a small village called Vettelhoven, which I grew to love but which unfortunately was a little too small for someone my age. Next on the list was the city of Bonn and the Siebengebirge. As a passionate cyclist, I explored the Rhine valley: the way from Bonn to Remagen, ferry across to Linz, back trough Bad Honnef, Königswinter and Beuel and I discovered one of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Germany in my opinion. Now, not only my personal interest has brought me to Bad Honnef but my professional career. I am happy to introduce myself as the successor of Marcus Imig, the new host at Charly’s Lounge on the University campus in Bad Honnef. I would be very happy to welcome the Bad Honnefers once in a while at Charly’s Lounge. The opening times are Monday to Thursday from 1 pm to 10:30 pm and Friday from 1 pm to 7 pm- and not only the prices are attractive but also the beautiful view from the roof top patio. I hope you are curious and will come to see me on campus sometime soon. Last but not least I would like to address a special thank you to Marcus Imig, for his trust, his cordial ways and for choosing me as his successor: dear Marcus, all the best and lot’s of success in Berlin!

IUBH Running Club nimmt an der J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge teil

Ganz nach dem Motto „Jogging gegen Mobbing“ beteiligte sich der Running Club der IUBH am J.P. Morgan Lauf quer durch die Frankfurter Innenstadt! Viele Wochen trainierten wir Laufbegeisterten der Internationalen Hochschule Bad Honnef/ Bonn bei Wind und Wetter, um uns auf den Höhepunkt der Laufsaison 2011 vorzubereiten. Die J.P.Morgan Corporate Challenge, ist das außergewöhnliche Laufereignis inmitten des Frankfurter Finanzzentrums. Anfänglich starteten nicht mehr als 527 Läufer aus 57 Firmen in Männer-, Frauen- und Mixed-Teams. Heute ist die J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge Serie in Frankfurt mit über 70.000 Startern die größte Laufveranstaltung der Welt. Ganz nebenbei ist der Firmenlauf auch zu einem der beliebtesten Volksfeste in Frankfurt geworden, bei dem die ansässigen Firmen und die Anwohner mit viel Hingabe die Teams anfeuern. Es war ein tolles Gefühl auf der ganzen Strecke durch Life-Musik, Samba-Combos, Fanfaren und begeisterte Zuschauer angespornt, laufen zu können. Nicht zu vergessen die Stimmung unter den Läufern selber, die in dem riesigen Starterfeld geduldig über 90 Minuten auf den Startschuß gewartet hatten, um dann einfach dabei zu sein. Unser neunköpfiges Läuferteam unter Leitung von Prof. Dr. Hans Olaf Warning verbrachte einen sportlichen Abend in Frankfurt, verbunden mit einem einmaligen Gemeinschaftserlebnis und einer fantastischen Stimmung.
IUBH Running Club participates in J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge
True to the motto jogging against mobbing participated, the running club of the IUBH in the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge run through the city center of Frankfurt! The members of our running club trained for many weeks in all weather conditions to prepare for the pinnacle of the running season 2011. The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge is the remarkable running event in the heart of the financial centre of Frankfurt. At the beginning, organizers faced just a few registrations for the run, resulting in only 527 starters from 57 firms split into men, women and mixed teams. Today, the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in Frankfurt is, with over 70,000 runners, the largest running event worldwide. This prompted the corporate challenge to become one of the best-liked public festivals in Frankfurt where companies and residents cheer on their teams. For us it was a unique feeling to run through thousands of enthused spectators who cheered us with life music, samba and fanfares from the starting line to the finish. Also remarkable was the great atmosphere amongst the participants, over 90 minutes patiently waiting for the start - just to be part of the event. Our nine starters of the IUBH running club under the lead of Prof. Dr. Hans Olaf Warning celebrated a sporty and exciting evening in Frankfurt.

Vom Rhein an die Spree

Praktikum! Ein spannendes, aber auch zugleich ein sehr zeitaufwendiges und beunruhigendes Thema. In welcher Stadt möchte ich mein Praktikum absolvieren? Welches Unternehmen passt am besten zu mir? Was sind meine Erwartungen und wie kann ich diese erfüllen? Viele Fragen, die es alle zu beantworten galt. Zum Glück bekamen wir von Anfang an eine gute Unterstützung seitens der Internationalen Hochschule. Die Mitarbeiter des Career Services standen uns mit Rat und Tat zur Seite und versorgten uns unentwegt mit neuen und spannenden Praktikumsangeboten, sodass für jeden Studenten etwas Passendes dabei war. Nachdem wir uns für ein Praktikum entschieden, unsere Bewerbungen abgesandt, das Bewerbungsgespräch überstanden und die Zusage erhalten hatten, stand für uns der Ort des Praktikums fest: Berlin! Ende Februar war es dann endlich soweit. Unser Umzug in eine der pulsierendsten Städte der Welt stand bevor und schon zwei Tage später war der erste Tag unseres Praktikums gekommen. Berlin war also unser neues zu Hause für die nächsten sechs Monate. Besonders reizvoll ist diese Stadt für uns Studentinnen des Studiengangs Eventmanagement, denn im letzten Jahr fanden 113.100 Events statt, die ca. 9,11 Millionen Gäste nach Berlin lockten. Nun sind wir schon drei Monate hier, nach wie vor sehr zufrieden mit unserer Wahl und genießen die Zeit. Die Hälfte unseres Praktikums ist bereits vorüber und wir werden sicherlich mit ein bisschen Wehmut diese tolle Stadt verlassen, aber eines ist sicher: Wir kommen wieder.
From Rhine to Spree
Internship! An exciting, but also a very time consuming and worrying issue. In which city would I like to accomplish my internship? Which company fits best? What are my expectations and how can I meet them? Many questions that all needed to be answered. Fortunately we got a great support by the International University of Applied Sciences right from the beginning on. The staff of the Career Services was on hand with help and advice and provided us with new and exciting internship offers constantly, so that each student found an appropriate position. After we had decided on a placement, posted our applications, passed the interview and got a commitment; the place of our internship was clear: Berlin! At the end of February the time had come. Our move to one of the busiest cities in the world was imminent and two days later it was the first day of our internship. Berlin would be our new home for the next six months. Particularly for us event management students the city is appealing: there were 113,100 events in the last year, which attracted about 9.11 million visitors to Berlin. By now, we have been in town for the past three months, still very happy with our decision and enjoying the time. The first half of our internship is already over and we will certainly leave this amazing city with a little melancholy, but one thing is for sure: We will come back.

Germany Travel Mart in Köln und Bonn: Die IUBH war dabei!

Deutschland – das Reiseland. Was für uns Heimat bedeutet, ist vielen Menschen aus aller Welt eine (lange) Reise wert, um der deutschen Kultur und Lebensart näherzukommen. Der Germany Travel Mart, der dieses Jahr in Köln und Bonn stattfand, bewirbt und vertritt dabei unser Land und ist mit über 1200 Teilnehmern aus aller Welt die größte Incoming- Messe Deutschlands. Mittendrin 80 Studierende der Internationalen Hochschule Bad Honnef (IUBH).
Um unser Theoriewissen mit Praxiserfahrung zu erweitern, wurden alle Studierenden für verschiedene Aufgaben, die wichtig für den reibungslosen Ablauf der Messe waren, eingesetzt. Angefangen mit der Ankunft der vielen Gäste am Kölner Hauptbahnhof oder am Airport Köln/Bonn, wo die Gäste empfangen und zu den jeweiligen Bussen begleitet wurden, die sie zu den Hotels brachten. In den jeweiligen Hotels wurde ein Hospitality Desk installiert und mit zwei bis drei Studierenden besetzt, die in den Folgetagen für alle Fragen und Probleme der Messeteilnehmer zuständig waren. Auch der Transfer zur Messe wurde von den Studierenden durchgeführt und so wurden die Gäste auf jeder Busfahrt über den Ablauf und Neuigkeiten informiert.
Beeindruckend waren vor allem die Abendveranstaltungen in Köln und in Bonn, sodass einem das Arbeiten an den Abenden etwas leichter fiel. Es war das erste Mal überhaupt, dass der Kölner Dom für eine nicht-kirchliche Veranstaltung freigegeben wurde und war somit etwas ganz besonderes als Veranstaltungsort. Doch auch Bonn hatte mit dem alten Bonner Bundestag einen geschichtsträchtigen Ort gefunden, an dem nach den offiziellen Reden alle Teilnehmer zusammen „Freude schöner Götterfunken“ auf Englisch sangen.
Germany Travel Mart in Cologne and Bonn: IUBH was there!
Germany- the holiday destination. What we call home is worth a (long) trip to many visitors to get to know the German culture and lifestyle. The Germany Travel Mart, which took place this year in Cologne and Bonn, promotes and represents our country and is the biggest incoming fair in Germany with over 1200 participants from all over the world. And in the midst of all: 80 students from the International University Bad Honnef (IUBH).
In order to broaden our theoretical knowledge with practical experience, all students were used for various jobs, which were important for a smooth operation of the fair. It started with the welcoming of the participants at the Cologne train station and the Cologne/ Bonn airport, where the guests were accompanied to the busses, taking them to their hotels. In the hotels, hospitality desks were installed and staffed with two or three students, who acted as a contact point for questions and problems from the fair visitors during the following days. The transfers between hotels and fairground were organized by the students as well, informing the guests of all news and events.
The evening events in Cologne and Bonn were particularly impressive which made working in the evenings more attractive. It was the first time that the cologne cathedral was opened for a nonreligious event and that made it a very special location. Bonn, however, had also found a history-charged location with the former German Federal Parliament building. That is where, after all the official speeches were finished, the participants sang “Ode to Joy” in English together.

Nach fast acht Jahren auf dem St. Anno Campus in Bad Honnef, in denen ich die Leitung der Studentenbar Charly’s Lounge übernommen hatte, war bereits am Freitag, 13. Mai 2011, mein letzter Arbeitstag an der Internationalen Hochschule Bad Honnef · Bonn.
Meine Arbeit hat mir viel Freude gemacht und ich werde Bad Honnef, den Campus, meine Kollegen und natürlich in erster Linie meine Gäste sehr vermissen. Besonders viel Spaß hatte ich immer an der Organisation der vielen Studenten- Partys, der Fußball-WMs sowie den legendären Oktoberfesten. Auch wenn es manchmal hoch herging, hat der schlichtweg unkomplizierte und herzliche Umgang mit meinen Gästen – unseren Studenten – so manches wett gemacht.
Die nächste Station auf meinem Lebensweg führt mich vom Rhein an die Spree, nach Berlin. Ich bleibe der Gastronomie treu und werde dort als Restaurantleiter in Potsdam tätig sein. Vielleicht kann ich den ein oder anderen ja auch dort einmal als Gast begrüßen.
Die neue Barchefin von Charly’s Lounge, Inez Jüchem, freut sich auf Sie und Euch und wird sich sicher als würdige Nachfolgerin erweisen. Sie bringt einiges an Erfahrung und viele eigene Ideen mit.
Zum Schluss möchte ich mich noch einmal für die vielen schönen Jahre, die ich hier verbringen durfte, bedanken. Behaltet mich in guter Erinnerung und vielleicht bis bald in Potsdam!
Time to say goodbye – Marcus Imig leaves IUBH
After almost eight years on the St. Anno Campus in Bad Honnef, in which I had taken on the duty of bar chef at the student bar, Charly’s Lounge, my last day at the International University Bad Honnef · Bonn was Friday, May 13.
I have always enjoyed my job and I will miss Bad Honnef, the campus, my colleagues and of course my guests. It was a lot of fun to organize the many student parties, the soccer world cup viewings and the legendary Oktoberfest parties. Even though it was sometimes challenging, the simply friendly and uncomplicated contact with my guests, the students, always made up for that.
The next stop on my way leads me from the Rhein River to the Spree River, to Berlin. I will remain true to food and beverage and take on a position as restaurant manager in Potsdam. I would be happy welcome one or another from Bad Honnef as my guest there as well.
The new bar chef, Inez Jüchem, is looking forward to welcoming you at Chaly’s Lounge. She brings along a lot of experience and many ideas for the future.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone for the last eight, wonderful years I was able to spend on campus. Please hold fond memories of me and maybe we’ll see each other soon in Potsdam!
Meet Your Buddy Day an der IUBH

Am 26. Mai lädt die Internationale Hochschule Bad Honnef · Bonn (IUBH) zum Meet Your Buddy Day ein. Interessierte schlüpfen für einen Tag in die Rolle eines Studenten und erhalten so einen Einblick in das Studium auf dem Campus in Bad Honnef. Während des Meet Your Buddy Days begleiten die Studieninteressenten einen aktuell Studierenden der Hochschule durch den Studienalltag. So lernen sie den Campus, Vorlesungen, sowie Dozenten und andere Studierende der IUBH kennen. Die Leiterin der Studienberatung, Mariann Göke, erklärt: „Gerade für Schüler, die sich in der Hochschulwelt noch nicht im Detail auskennen ist es wichtig, sich vor Studienstart umfassend über Hochschule und Studienfächer zu informieren. Deshalb bieten wir mit unserem Meet Your Buddy Day Studieninteressenten die Gelegenheit, unsere Hochschule hautnah zu entdecken. Dribbeln, Passen, Körbe werfen!

Die Internationale Hochschule Bad Honnef (IUBH) hat ein neues Basketballteam für das Sommersemester 2011. Als Teamkapitän hat Glenn Curth die Initiative ergriffen und die Studenten der Internationalen Hochschule motiviert, Basketball als Freizeitausgleich zum Studium zu spielen. „Sport ist ein guter Ausgleich zum Alltag in der Uni und beim Mannschaftssport wie Basketball lernt man zudem auch noch Teil einer Gruppe zu sein und gemeinsam nach Erfolg zu streben.“ findet auch Moritz Nücken, Student des Internationalen Hotelmanagements. Immer mehr Studenten nehmen an der Sportgruppe teil und spielen zwei Mal die Woche in unterschiedlichen Trainingshallen im Basketballteam der IUBH. Was mit acht Studenten anfing hat sich innerhalb von eingen Woche auf 16 Spieler gesteigert und mittlerweile besteht das Team aus Spielern aus Bulgarien, Russland, USA, Indien, Afrika und Deutschland. Mit unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen und Fähigkeiten können manche Teilnehmer an ihren Basketballkünsten arbeiten indem sie mit den mehr Geübten trainieren. „Ich habe mir nie vorgestellt Basketball zu spielen, aber es macht ehrlich richtig Spaß und außerdem ist es auch ein gutes Workout.” sagt Gabriela Uribe, Austauschstudentin von der San Diego State University in den USA. Das IUBH Basketball Team ist bereit für das neue Semester und kann es kaum erwarten, neue Talente zu gewinnen. Aktuell befindet sich das Team in der Vorbereitung für sein erstes Turnier überhaupt. Vom 9. bis 12. Juni wird das Team die IUBH bei der Eurokonstantia, einer jährlich ausgetragenen Sportveranstaltung in Süddeutschland, vertreten.
“Bounce-Bounce, Pass, Swoosh!”
The International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef (IUBH) has a new Basketball Team for the summer 2011 semester. Being the team leader, Glenn Curth has taken the initiative to motivate students to join basketball to get their minds off of their studies for a few hours and just have fun. “Sport is a good balanceto our studies and especially in team sports such as basketball you learn to be part of a group and strive for success together.” claims Moritz Nücken, student of International Hospitality Management. With great training and playing twice a week in different training facilities, there has been an increase of student involvement within the IUBH Basketball Team. Starting off with only 8 students, it has significantly increased to nearly 16 students within a few weeks and meanwhile the international team has members from Bulgaria, Russia, USA, India, Africa and German. With all different level types, the students can improve on their skills by playing with those more experienced players. “Playing basketball is one sport I would have never imagined playing, but honestly it is so fun, not to mention it is a really good work-out”- says Gabriela Uribe, exchange student from our partner university San Diego State University in the US. The IUBH Basketball Team is ready for this semester and cannot wait for more students to get involved! Currently the team is preparing to participate in its first tournament ever. From the 8th to 12th June this year the team will represent the IUBH at the Eurokonstantia, an annual sports event in south Germany.

[Theorie + Praxis]² - so lässt sich meine letzte Woche an der IUBH tatsächlich am treffensten beschreiben! Seit Kurzem unterstütze ich das Study Advisory Service & Marketing (SAS) Team der Internationalen Hochschule Bad Honnef vor Ort und kann so wertvolle Einblicke für das bislang sehr theoretische Schreiben meiner Diplomarbeit erlangen. Als Tourism Management Studentin hat mir mein Studium zwar schon einiges an Praxis geboten, für die Endphase hatte ich bislang aber eher mit langen Bibliotheksaufenthalten gerechnent.
Um so erfrischender war dann die vergangene Woche: mit neuem Logo, verändertem Namen, neuen Erstemestern, und vielen fleißigen Händen hat sich die IUBH beim vergangenen Open Campus Day am ersten Aprilwochenende der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Das parallel laufende Frühlingsprogramm im Zentrum von Bad Honnef, „Fühl dich Frühlich“, und das unfassbar sonnige Wetter zogen die Besucher in den Bann – in den der bunten und frühlingshaften Stadt und den unseres kleinen, charmanten Parks. Hautnahe erlebe ich seitdem die Marketingpraxis in der Umsetzung und sammle einzigartige Eindrücke und Erfahrungen. Tatsächlich sprüht die Dynamik auf dem Campus und mit vielen neuen Projekten in Planung und Umsetzung wird das laufende Semster in Sachen Ereignisreichtum den vorangegangenen Semestern in nichts nachstehen. Kann es sein, dass mit vielen neuen Gesichtern an der IUBH auch die Campus- Ideenschmiede neu angefeuert wurde?

[Theory + Experience]² - that describes best my last week on the IUBH campus! Recently, I have joined the Study Advisory Service & Marketing (SAS) Team on campus, thereby spicing up the lately, mostly theoretical endeavor of writing my Diploma Thesis. So far, my Studies in Tourism Management have offered a range of exciting and valuable experiences along the years to me already. Hence, for the final part of my studies, I had principally expected some months of rather dull library session.
Guess my excitement as this proved differently! The last two weeks were fabulous: with a new logo, a slightly changed name, many freshers, and numerous busy and willing hands for help, the IUBH opened up for the public for the year’s first big event – the Open Campus Day. While the city of Bad Honnef thrilled its visitors with a colorful and happy springtime-welcome, this unexpected sunny and warm first weekend in April also pampered the guests on campus and made an interesting day even more enjoyable.
Since then, I witness marketing strategies being put into practice, providing me with various valuable and exciting insights already. In fact, there is so much energy in the air and with a range of new projects in the pipeline, this semester will not be any less exciting than those before. And it actually seems as if a lot of new faces on campus might have lightened up the IUBH mint of ideas again, am I right?
Abwechslung pur! – Meine erste Woche als Studienberater an der IUBH

Was erwartet mich wohl in meinem neuen Job als Studienberater? Neue Gesichter, neue Aufgaben und das spannende Umfeld einer internationalen Hochschule. Nach Studium der Fremdsprachen und Wirtschaftswissenschaften im In- und Ausland sowie ersten Berufserfahrungen habe ich zum 1. April meine Stelle im Study Advisory Service an der IUBH in Bad Honnef angetreten. Während meiner ersten Woche habe ich bereits viele Dozenten und Studierende aus der ganzen Welt kennen lernen können. Überall wurde ich mit viel Freude empfangen – sei es mit einem „schön, dass Sie an Bord sind“ oder „nice to have you on board“. Erstes Highlight war mit Sicherheit der Open Campus Cay am 2. April. In Schnuppervorlesungen, Vorträgen und Einzelgesprächen lernte ich gemeinsam mit den Besuchern den Campus kennen: Besser kann der Einstieg gar nicht laufen!
Zeitgleich mit mir angefangen hat meine Kollegin Caroline Faillard. Nach ihrem Studienabschluss an der Maastricht University im Bereich International Management freut sie sich, nun auch beruflich in der Hochschulwelt tätig zu sein. Schon jetzt nehmen wir an Studienberatungsgesprächen teil und stehen Interessenten telefonisch oder per Mail zur Verfügung. Der enge Kontakt zu Interessenten und Studierenden, die freundliche Atmosphäre auf dem Campus und das abwechslungsreiche Tätigkeitsfeld machen einfach Spaß. Deshalb freuen wir uns sehr, ab jetzt zum Team der IUBH dazu zugehören und künftig alle Fragen zum Studienbeginn zu beantworten – Caroline Faillard im Bereich Hotel Management und ich im Bereich Tourismus und Event Management. That was fun! – My first week as a study adviser at IUBH
What will it be like to work as a study adviser? New faces, new challenges and the exciting work place atmosphere of an international university. After having studied Modern Foreign Languages and Economics in Germany and abroad and having gained first professional experiences I have been really looking forward to starting to work at IUBH in the study advisory service department on April 1st. In the first week I have already met many lecturers and students from all over the world. Everybody has welcomed me – either with a warm “Schön, dass Sie an Bord sind” or with a “Nice to have you on board”. My first highlight certainly was the Open Campus Day on April 2nd. My colleague Caroline Faillard also started on April 1st. Having graduated in International Management at Maastricht University she is now looking forward to working in the academic sector on a professional level. We are already taking part in individual consultations and answering enquiries by phone or mail. The close contact to young people, the friendly atmosphere and the varied scope of activities are just fun. Therefore, we are glad to be part of the IUBH team and are happy to answer any questions regarding studies at IUBH – Caroline Faillard is in charge of the study programme Hospitality Management whereas I am responsible for the programmes Tourism and Event Management. Good bye Bad Honnef – Hello Barcelona!

Für die vielen internationalen Studenten, Professoren und Mitarbeiter mit englischer Übersetzung.
Nach drei Semestern an der Internationalen Fachhochschule Bad Honnef · Bonn hieß es für mich Adéu Bad Honnef und Benvingut a Barcelona. Im August letzten Jahres begann mein sechsmonatiges Praktikum an der Rezeption im W Hotel Barcelona… und woops, da würde der Brand Manager mich sofort korrigieren: Du bist ein Talent am Welcome Desk! Denn in W Hotels (eine der neun Marken der Starwood Hotels & Resorts Hotelkette) herrscht eine sogenannte W Sprache. Somit war meine erste Aufgabe in Barcelona das W Vokabular zu lernen um den Gästen zu erklären, dass sie durch den Living Room (Lobby) zum Wet (Pool) und zum Sweat (Fitness Center) kommen und bei Fragen einfach unseren Whatever/Whenever Service (Telefonzentrale) kontaktieren können. Da der Welcome Desk die erste Anlaufstelle für alle Gäste war, war meine Arbeit sehr abwechslungsreich. Dabei fiel alles an: neugierige Menschen über das Hotel informieren, Gäste ein- und auschecken und das Organisieren von WOW Momenten für Hotelgäste. Sogenannte WOW Momente unterscheiden W Hotels von anderen Hotelmarken, denn den Gästen soll jeder Wunsch erfüllt werden, wenn sie eine Nacht in einem der weltweiten 58 W Hotels gebucht haben. Dafür ist die Whatever/ Whenever Abteilung zuständig, die alles möglich macht, 24 Stunden am Tag, 7 Tage die Woche, solange es legal ist. Da kann es schon mal vorkommen, dass eine amerikanische Familie mit ihren Kindern eine Badewanne voller Gummibärchen in ihrer Suite findet, um den Kindern nach einem langen Flug eine kleine Freude zu machen. Und all das an einem Arbeitsplatz in einem segelschiffartigen Glaskomplex in dem man fast direkt den Wellen des Mittelmeers lauschen kann. Einen besseren Standort für ein Praktikum in einer aufregenden Stadt wie Barcelona konnte ich mir nicht wünschen.

After three semesters at the International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef · Bonn I said Adéu to Bad Honnef and Benvingut a Barcelona. Last august I started my six months internship at the reception at the W Hotel Barcelona. Woops… now the brand manager would correct me immediately: You are a talent at the Welcome Desk! Because in W hotels (one of nine brand of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts hotel chain) everybody uses the W language. So my first task in Barcelona was to learn the W vocabulary in order to explain the guests that they need to cross the Living Room (Lobby) to get to the Wet (pool) and to the Sweat (fitness center) and for all kinds of questions can contact the Whatever/ Whenever department (operator). My task amongst others included: inform curious guests about the hotel, check in and out of guests and the organization of WOW moments for hotel guests. So called WOW moments make W Hotels different from others since every guest wish should be fulfilled when they book a night in one of the worldwide 58 W hotels. That’s the main task of the Whatever/Whenever department, which makes everything possible, 24/7 as long as it’s legal. It could for example happen that an American family with their children finds a bath tub full of gummi bears in their suite to delight their stay a little after a long flight. All of that happens while working in a construction, looking like a sailing ship which is made out of glass and listening to the waves of the Mediterranean Sea. I couldn’t have imagined a better internship in such an exciting city like Barcelona.
